Last year in October I took an epic trip along the Garden Route in South Africa with one of my best friends and ultimate travel buddy.
We decided that a trip to Cape Town, South Africa would not be complete if we didn’t make our way up the coast along the famous Garden Route. If you are considering a trip to South Africa I would highly recommend making a road trip part of your plans.
The trip will forever be forged in my memories filled with so many incredible places. These were the places that stood out to me the most and I highly recommend seeing them all during your trip…
1. Table Mountain
Table Mountain is a very popular destination around Cape Town. This is easily reachable by car as it is only about a 20 minute drive from the city. Table mountain offers not only beautiful views but also adventure.
The top of the mountain is accessible by cable car (book tickets in advance online to save yourself some time) and at the top you can find breath taking views. If you are feeling a little more adventurous make sure to find the abseiling crew at Abseil Africa and climb down the side of the mountain.
2. Stay in a Train Hostel
On your way up the coast an experience I highly recommend is to stay at the Santos Express Train Hostel in Mossel Bay. Not only are you on the beach but you get to stay in a train! The restaurant has great food and the bar offers Karaoke.
3. Cape Point
Although it is about a 2 hour detour I would not have missed the opportunity to see exactly where the Atlantic and Pacific oceans meet. The rocky Oceanside was a breathtaking photographic opportunity.
4. Bloukran’s Bridge
On your way to Elizabeth Town you will have to cross a toll bridge: Bloukran’s Bridge. It is a massive 700 feet above the Bloukran’s river and is quite the sight to see.
If you are feeling especially adventurous that day then check out Face Adrenalin and bungy off the bridge. It was one of the most terrifying but exhilarating moments of my life. I don’t regret one second! Read more about my experience bungy jumping for the this time here.
5. Schotia Safari Game Reserve
At the end of your route in Port Elizabeth you have the opportunity to glamp out in the wild and experience the true outdoors at a safari game reserve.
The Schotia Family Safari’s have been in business for over 25 years and are dedicated to the animals safety and wellbeing. During your stay you will get to roam their land on an open Land Rover with a well-informed guide.
Not only will you get to see elephants, giraffes, and the white rhino but you might also see a lion pack!
Being out on the safari was truly magnificent and it gave me a respect for these amazing animals. If you can’t make it Kruger National Park for an in-depth safari I recommend this reserve.
